10-Minute AMRAP: 30 KB Swings + Burpees — Fell Short at 4 Rounds
Tested a brutal 10-minute AMRAP: 30 kettlebell swings at 35 lb paired with burpees. Fell just shy of 4 complete rounds. Real numbers, pacing breakdown, and lessons learned.
10-Minute AMRAP
35 lb (16 kg) Kettlebell
5 Rounds
3 Rounds + 24 Swings (Fell short of 4 full rounds)
The plan looked clean on paper: 10 minutes on the clock, alternating 30 kettlebell swings (35 lb) and unbroken burpees.
The goal was 5 full rounds. The reality? Redlining early, surviving the grip burn, and falling just short of finishing 4 complete rounds (3 rounds + 24 swings as the buzzer sounded).
The Workout Protocol
- Time Cap: 10 minutes
- Structure: AMRAP (As Many Rounds As Possible)
- Round Elements:
- 30 Russian Kettlebell Swings (35 lb / 16 kg)
- 10 Chest-to-Floor Burpees
- Target Pace: 2:00 per round
Where the Wheels Fell Off
- Grip fatigue under cardiovascular distress: 30 swings at 35 lbs isn't devastating in round 1, but by round 3, your forearms are on fire while your heart rate is already pushing into Zone 5.
- Transition latency: Burpees immediately following high-volume swings demand aggressive breathing discipline. Dropping into burpees while gasping for air bled 8–12 seconds on every transition.
- Pacing delusion: Coming out hot in the first 90 seconds paid zero dividends in minutes 6 through 10.
Why This Matters for HYROX Phoenix 2027
HYROX isn't about peak sprint wattage; it's about sustained threshold output under compound fatigue. In the Men's Open (age group 50–54), managing recovery between heavy functional stations (sleds, burpee broad jumps, wall balls) determines whether you run out of fuel halfway through the race.
Training with Gird lets me track these micro-failures objectively rather than relying on how I "felt" about the workout. You record the session, log the raw numbers, and let the training plan adapt rather than guessing tomorrow's load.
The Takeaway
Failure on an AMRAP isn't a setback if it calibrates your threshold pacing. Next attempt on this protocol will cap round 1 pacing to save grip stamina for minutes 7–10.
I track all my interval paces, kettlebell loads, and HYROX prep sessions inside Gird. If you want structured programming with adaptive macro balancing:
