HYROX Diary: Rest Weekend — Glute Flare After Friday Timed Mile & Catch-Up Log
September 20, 2026 HYROX diary: Weekend recovery in Eldorado (Santa Fe), NM after Friday's sub-8 timed mile attempt halted at 1100m from a flared left glute, unlogged weekend date nutrition, and the week ahead protocol.

Friday Timed Mile Sub-8 Attempt / Sat-Sun Rest
Friday: 1100m in ~6:30 (Stopped for Pain, RPE 6) / Sat-Sun: Full Rest
Sunday, September 20, 2026. Catching up out of Eldorado (Santa Fe), New Mexico.
There is no workout video today. When training in your 50s for HYROX Phoenix under the Base Build (sub-1:20 target), some of the most critical entries in the training journal are the ones without bar bends, SkiErg meters, or YouTube highlight reels.
This entry exists to honestly account for the entire weekend story: the aftermath of Friday’s timed mile attempt that re-aggravated the left glute, the reality of an unlogged rest weekend with an overnight date, and the clear operational adjustments mapped out for the training week ahead.
Friday 2026-09-18: Timed Mile Attempt (Session e0400dce…)
Friday morning was set up as an honest benchmark test on the road to building aerobic speed: a timed outdoor mile attempt targeting a sub-8:00 pace.
- Intent: Mile attempt for sub-8:00
- What happened: The left glute—which had felt manageable during Thursday's upper-body and roman chair pivot—felt good and stable through the opening 1,000 meters. But right around the 1,000-meter mark, the glute flared acutely. I ran another ~100 meters attempting to assess whether it was temporary tightness, but the pain worsened sharply.
- Result: Stopped immediately at 1,100 meters in ~6:30 (Gird: 390 s, capped) · RPE 6
- Note logged in Gird: *"Attempted mile for sub-8. Left glute flared ~1000 m, worsened; stopped at 1100 m in ~6:30. Do not push run."*
Updated Coach Restrictions
Following Friday’s flare-up, the movement boundaries were updated immediately in Gird:
- Strict restriction: NO running, NO burpee broad jumps (BBJ), NO hard hinging, and NO loaded single-leg work until pain-free walking and easy ski work are fully demonstrated.
- Allowed stimulus: Prioritize Concept2 SkiErg, strict upper body volume, roman chair core/back work, and dedicated hip/glute mobility.
Friday Nutrition Log (Partial)
Friday was scheduled as the first day stepping down into a dialed 2,200-calorie cut following Thursday's 2,800-calorie maintenance.
- Targets for 2026-09-18: 2,200 kcal · 189g Protein · 220g Carbs · 63g Fat
- Logged Intake: ~1,140 kcal · 110g Protein · 102g Carbs · 38g Fat
- *Breakfast:* Oats + protein powder (+ butter)
- *Midday:* Fairlife + protein powder + banana
- *Afternoon:* Ham sandwich
- Missing Data: Dinner and before-bed fuel were completely unlogged after the running disruption. Logging only ~half the target day is an honest gap to acknowledge.

Saturday & Sunday: Rest Weekend & Full Reset
Across Saturday, September 19 and Sunday, September 20:
- No workouts: Zero training sessions scheduled or executed following Friday's run stoppage. Total rest across the board to let acute inflammation in the glute settle down.
- Overnight date: Spent Saturday overnight on a date night with my wife, enjoyed a few drinks, stepped away from the whiteboard, and completely disconnected from the rigors of the training cycle.
- Nutrition tracking: No nutrition was logged all weekend. After partial logging Friday, Sat–Sun were complete unlogged days on the rolling plan. In multi-year athletic builds, periodic mental resets happen—the key is acknowledging them on paper rather than retroactively pretending they were dialed.

The Week Ahead: Tactical Priorities
Getting back to work Monday morning out of Eldorado doesn't mean recklessly testing the leg. It means executing high-value volume inside safe movement boundaries while aggressively attacking underlying restrictions.
- Keep the Two-a-Day Pace: Maintain the two-a-day schedule rhythm with morning conditioning and evening accessory/strength sessions, leveraging the SkiErg and upper body volume so systemic conditioning does not drop off.
- Double Down on Stretching & Nutrition: Lock macro tracking back in against daily targets, eliminating gaps in evening meal documentation, and dedicating real time to daily hip/glute mobility.
- No Running Until Wednesday: The left glute gets a strict running moratorium through Tuesday night. We will retest running tolerance on Wednesday at the earliest, and only if normal gait is 100% pain-free.
- BBJ Mobility Gap Priority: Addressing a glaring mobility bottleneck for burpee broad jumps (BBJ). Currently, I cannot bring one foot all the way up to the hand while keeping that hand planted flat on the ground. This hip flexion and ankle mobility restriction creates massive inefficiency and extra mechanical torque on the posterior chain during burpees. Mobilizing that specific pattern is a primary rehab objective for the week.

Road to HYROX Phoenix
Friday’s mile attempt was an honest reality check: the left glute isn't ready for sustained speed endurance yet. But acknowledging when to step off the track at 1,100 meters preserves the broader multi-year mission.
We log every benchmark, every flare-up, and every rest day in Gird as we build toward HYROX Phoenix 2027. Time to stretch, fuel, and get back to work.
